Keep Shooting
March 15, 2015

On February 9, 2015, my work was published for the very first time. I wrote a piece on my yoga journey, a short bit challenging others to take on the practice (and asking those who have already embarked on their journeys to do so more seriously). I wrote the article for myself, not thinking that I’d be given the opportunity to share it with the world. I submitted the  piece to Thought Catalog because “why not? It’s not like they’ll publish it anyway.”

Three weeks later, I had a little surprise waiting in my Outlook inbox.

And here lies one of our biggest flaws: we tend to underestimate ourselves. I won’t apply for this job because I’m under-qualified anyway. A guy like him would never be interested in a girl like me. There’s no way in hell I could run a 5K marathon.

How could you know if you’ve never tried?

Had I not submitted that article, I may have never been published. Had I not filled out the application for a Contributing Writer position, I may not have ever conquered that one milestone of writing for Elite Daily. Many times, we let constant defeat and rejection lead us to believe that we are not good enough.

As Wayne Gretzky once said, “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”

  1. It’s so true how humans aways naturally tend to be negative and think “we can’t do it”. Especially as writers we always tend to think our work isn’t good enough. Loved the article, keep writing and keep submitting! You’re a great writer! And thanks for the follow!
